Reflections from Sunday

This week we covered part5 of our series on The Lord's Prayer as found in Matthew 6: 9-13

9"Pray, then, in this way:
'Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10'Your kingdom come
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
11'Give us this day our daily bread.
12'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]'

We looked at verse 13 where it states, "And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil". This portion of this prayer has 2 parts. The first part is "do not lead us into temptation" and the second is "deliver us from evil". The Greek word "pirasmos" means temptation or trial. As we look at this verse that teaches us how we should pray, we must be reminded that God does not tempt us (James 1:13). We also need to be mindful to pray that we would not give into the power of temptation and be drawn into sin (James 1:14). We need to pray that God would deliver us from evil. We need to be praying that HE would deliver us from the power and practice of sin in our lives (sanctification) until the day when we are freed from the presence of sin (glorification). We also need to pray that we are making progress in these things::

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
~Titus 2:11-14
